The Paediatric Renal System Area is a knowledge area of the Children’s Hospital within the organisational model of Vall d’Hebron University Hospital, dedicated to the specialised care of children with renal conditions. It addresses the diagnostic, therapeutic and follow-up needs of paediatric patients, with a comprehensive approach tailored to each stage of development.

This area works in close coordination with the other knowledge areas, particularly the cross-cutting ones, to ensure safe, continuous care based on specialised expertise. The knowledge area model makes it possible to concentrate expertise, share clinical criteria and optimise resources, contributing to high-quality paediatric care centred on the patient and their family.

Diagnostic Imaging Area

The Diagnostic Imaging Area is a cross-cutting knowledge area within the organisational model of Vall d’Hebron University Hospital, essential for diagnosis, follow-up and clinical decision-making across all care specialties. It supports the entire hospital campus through advanced imaging techniques, working in coordinated integration with the other knowledge areas to provide a rapid, accurate response aligned with clinical needs.

This area brings together diagnostic imaging services and associated disciplines, including medical physics and radiation protection, under shared criteria of quality, safety and innovation. The knowledge area model facilitates resource optimisation, protocol harmonisation and the incorporation of new technologies, contributing to more efficient, safer and patient-centred care.

Treatment Area

The Treatment Area is a cross-cutting knowledge area within the organisational model of Vall d’Hebron University Hospital, playing a central role in the therapeutic management of patients throughout the entire care process. This area focuses particularly on medication and pharmacological treatment, supporting clinical teams in therapeutic decision-making and ensuring safe, effective and evidence-based use.

The area brings together specialised disciplines and units that work in a coordinated manner with all care areas across the campus, with a holistic view of the patient. The knowledge area model makes it possible to optimise resources, harmonise therapeutic criteria and promote quality, safety and innovation in treatments, contributing to more integrated, efficient care focused on achieving the best health outcomes.

Clinical Laboratories Area

Clinical laboratories are a key cross-cutting knowledge area within the organisational model of Vall d’Hebron University Hospital. They provide diagnostic and follow-up support to all clinical specialties and to all hospitals across the Campus, working in close coordination with the other knowledge areas. Their activity is essential for clinical decision-making in both acute and chronic processes, ensuring a rapid, reliable response aligned with the needs of healthcare teams.

This area brings together the full range of laboratory disciplines and units, which work in a coordinated manner with a holistic view of the patient and the care process. The knowledge area model makes it possible to optimise resources, share expertise and ensure common standards of quality, innovation and safety, contributing to more efficient, integrated and knowledge-based care.

Neurorehabilitation Area

The Neurorehabilitation Knowledge Area at Vall d’Hebron University Hospital is dedicated to comprehensive care for adult patients, with a multidisciplinary team including rehabilitation physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, social workers, dietitians, clinical psychologists, neuropsychologists, orthopedic technicians, patients, and caregivers. Care is provided at the General Hospital, the Traumatology and Rehabilitation Hospital, the Burn Unit, and the Rehabilitation Day Hospital, covering acute, subacute, and chronic phases for both inpatients and outpatients, ensuring continuity of care and adaptation to the complexity of each case.

The area integrates care, teaching, and research, highlighting humanization initiatives such as the Therapeutic Order program with adolescents, and innovative projects incorporating new technologies: virtual reality, transcranial stimulation, robotics, and telerehabilitation. An innovative ecosystem is also being validated, integrating virtual and augmented reality applications, smartwatches, and AI-based assistants, with the goal of optimizing resources and improving treatment outcomes for stroke patients.

Pediatric Oncohematology Area

The Pediatric Oncohematology Knowledge Area at Vall d’Hebron University Hospital integrates the inpatient ward, Day Hospital, outpatient clinics, the clinical unit, and the transversal service at Sant Just. The area provides care for patients with childhood cancer, hematological diseases, and those undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, combining inpatient care with chemotherapeutic and non-chemotherapeutic treatments, as well as sedation for specific procedures.

Working within areas of expertise facilitates comprehensive and highly specialized care, delivered by multidisciplinary teams that include physicians, nursing staff, and other support professionals. The area covers the entire care pathway, from preclinical research to clinical trials and advanced therapies, ensuring individualized care and continuous follow-up. Notable projects include Superbox, Cuida Jugant and RICK Pediàtric for children with brain tumors, as well as therapeutic simulations, which enhance the patient experience and provide emotional support to families.

Heart Area

The Heart Area at Vall d’Hebron University Hospital provides comprehensive care for patients with cardiovascular diseases, integrating clinical care, teaching, and research.This organization enables care for patients ranging from emergency admissions to those requiring prolonged hospitalization or complex interventions, with coordinated, multidisciplinary team management. Specialized nursing plays a central role, delivering targeted, personalized care throughout the patient journey.

Organizing care by areas of expertise facilitates the standardization of protocols and consolidation of professional expertise, enhancing coordination and patient safety. The area develops projects focused on innovation and continuous improvement, such as the advanced heart failure treatment program, which incorporates ventricular assist devices and state-of-the-art therapies. In addition, the area promotes ongoing team training, participation in clinical studies, and the application of advanced diagnostic technologies to optimize patient outcomes and quality of life. With this comprehensive and innovative approach, the Heart Area combines the highest level of specialization with a strong commitment to patient-centered care.
