The Post-Surgical Care Area at the Traumatology, Rehabilitation, and Burn Hospital includes three inpatient units, as well as an admission unit and outpatient clinics. It provides care for adult patients undergoing maxillofacial, plastic, ankle, spine, shoulder, knee, and hip surgery. The multidisciplinary team includes physicians, nurses, TCAI specialists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers, dietitians, pharmacists, orthopedic technicians, orderlies, and administrative staff, ensuring comprehensive care and continuity for patients and their families.

Working within areas of expertise facilitates coordination, a holistic view of the care process, and the creation of synergies among professionals. The area promotes initiatives such as perioperative anemia optimization, implementing measures to reduce blood loss and minimize transfusions, thereby improving recovery and reducing complications and hospital stay. With this approach, the area combines multidisciplinary collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement to provide high-quality post-surgical care.

Oncohematology Area

The Oncohematology Area at the General Hospital provides comprehensive care for patients with oncohematologic diseases, from diagnosis and treatment to follow-up. It includes inpatient wards, day hospitals, radiotherapy units, and a dedicated hospitalization area at the Pere Virgili Center. Patients also receive support from transversal services such as palliative care, clinical psychology, the clinical trials unit, and spaces for complementary therapies.

Organization by areas of expertise fosters interdisciplinary coordination, versatile professional training, and care tailored to each patient’s complexity. Notable initiatives include the implementation of a computerized safe treatment administration system, ensuring traceability and safety throughout the therapeutic process. Solid Organ Transplant Area

The Adult Solid Organ Transplant Knowledge Area at Vall d’Hebron University Hospital provides care for liver, kidney, and lung transplant patients, from initial diagnosis through the entire post-operative care process. The area is primarily located on the eighth floor and manages patients with conditions requiring highly complex interventions. Organizing care by areas of expertise enables comprehensive, coordinated care, improving quality and continuity throughout the entire patient journey.

This organizational model helps reduce hospitalizations, alleviate pressure on the healthcare system, and promote treatment adherence. A notable initiative is the transplant patient training program, which encourages health education, active participation in care, and optimization of quality of life, as well as graft survival. This program advances precision medicine by incorporating personalized immunosuppressive therapies and applying innovative technologies to enhance clinical outcomes and patient autonomy.

Immune-Mediated Diseases Area

The Immune-Mediated Diseases Area at Vall d’Hebron University Hospital integrates the services of allergy, dermatology, and rheumatology, which share the management of immunologically mediated conditions that are often chronic and have a significant impact on quality of life. The activity is primarily outpatient and includes biologic treatments, day hospital care, and specialized procedures such as desensitization to new drugs, dermatologic surgery, and diagnostic ultrasound in rheumatology.

Collaborative work among the services generates synergies that enhance care, research, and teaching, fostering comprehensive attention for patients with chronic inflammatory diseases. Specialized nursing plays a key role in patient follow-up and health education, particularly in the administration of biologic treatments. In addition, the Al·lèrgia Zero course, promoted by the Allergy service, strengthens professional training in the detection and management of allergic reactions. Burn Patient Care Area

The Burn Patient Care Area at Vall d’Hebron University Hospital provides comprehensive and specialized care, including emergency services, critical and step-down hospitalization units, operating rooms, day hospital, gym, therapeutic park, and specialized consultations such as micropigmentation. It cares for both adult and pediatric patients, coordinating medical, surgical, and rehabilitation services to ensure continuity of care. The Burn Unit is a reference center in Catalonia and nationally, accredited by the European Burn Association, covering a population of over 8.7 million people.

Notable initiatives include the Burn Patient Process project, which reviews and improves 145 key points within the unit to enhance care quality and patient satisfaction. With this approach, the area combines clinical excellence, innovation, and comprehensive support to address the physical and emotional complexity of burn patients.

Spinal Cord Injuries Area

The Spinal Cord Injuries Area at the Traumatology, Rehabilitation, and Burn Hospital is a reference center for acute and traumatic spinal cord injuries in Catalonia and Andorra, caring for both adults and children, as well as other etiologies. The multidisciplinary team includes rehabilitation physicians, nurses, nursing assistants, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and orderlies, with support from other specialists. The area provides physiotherapy and occupational therapy for both inpatients and outpatients and conducts follow-up during the acute phase and for chronic complications through outpatient clinics. It also participates in teaching and research, including multicenter studies and professional training courses.

The role of the advanced practice nurse is particularly notable, providing specialized care, supporting families, and assisting other units and primary care. The area emphasizes humanized, patient- and family-centered care, enhancing communication, well-being, and quality of life throughout the rehabilitation process.

Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Nutrition Area

The Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Nutrition Area of Vall d’Hebron University Hospital has a multidisciplinary team composed of endocrinology and nutrition specialists, nurses expert in diabetes and nutritional support, dietitians, and podiatrists. The area has a highly cross-cutting activity due to the high incidence of diabetes, obesity, and malnutrition among hospitalized patients, and combines clinical care with teaching and research within the Diabetes and Metabolism group of VHIR. Coordinated work among professionals has enabled the development of an integrative model for the management of diabetes, obesity, and nutritional support, improving planning, quality of care, and continuity of patient follow-up.

Currently, the area focuses its efforts on the early detection of malnutrition and the follow-up of patients with poor glycemic control, aiming to reduce complications and hospital stays. Through diabetes education, nutritional support, and the improvement of care pathways, comprehensive and personalized care is ensured, oriented toward enhancing patients’ health and well-being.

Infectious Diseases Area

The Infectious Diseases Area at Vall d’Hebron University Hospital provides comprehensive care in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of infections, both in endemic and epidemic contexts, as demonstrated during the management of COVID-19. Daily collaboration among services allows for a rapid and coordinated response to relevant clinical results, with joint actions in prevention and patient follow-up. The area also conducts extensive outpatient activity at the Adult Multipurpose Hospital and the Vall d’Hebron-Drassanes Building, offering programs for treatment, prevention, and international health advice.

This cross-disciplinary, multidisciplinary approach ensures coherent and high-quality care, fostering the development of new care models. Notably, the new traveler care model incorporates advanced practice nurses for counseling and vaccination, an innovative project that has proven effective and autonomous. Through this commitment to innovation and collaboration, the area consolidates a safe, flexible care model tailored to the needs of the population.

Renal System Area

The Renal System Knowledge Area at Vall d’Hebron University Hospital provides comprehensive care for patients with kidney disease, both in outpatient and inpatient settings. Services include outpatient consultations, hospitalization on the eighth floor of the General Hospital, as well as living-donor and deceased-donor kidney transplantation. The area supports patients throughout the course of their disease, from early stages to advanced phases, ensuring personalized therapeutic options aimed at optimizing quality of life.

Working within areas of expertise allows for coordination of hospital-based, home-based, and conservative treatments, optimizing resources and facilitating shared decision-making between professionals and patients. Notable initiatives include the advanced chronic kidney disease consultation, which guides the selection of the most appropriate treatment and educational activities on lifestyle, dietary habits, and treatment adherence, aiming to better control the disease and prevent complications.

Post-Surgical Care Area

The Post-Surgical Care Area at the General Hospital, located on the third and fourth floors, cares for patients from various specialties according to the intensity of care and clinical complexity. The short-stay unit is on the fourth floor (odd-numbered rooms), intermediate care is on the same floor (even-numbered rooms), and intensified care is on the third floor. This organization, based on areas of expertise, allows for comprehensive and standardized care, improving coordination and the quality of surgical care.

The area promotes the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) program, which addresses the surgical process through a multidisciplinary, patient-centered approach, from preoperative preparation to postoperative recovery. The program provides personalized tools to optimize the patient’s condition before surgery and reduce complications afterward, promoting faster and safer recovery. With this holistic approach, the area ensures care focused on efficiency, safety, and patient well-being.
