Les persones que pateixen un Trastorn Obsessiu Compulsiu es caracteritzen perquè tenen pensaments recurrents i perseverants que generalment resulten desagradables, la qual cosa es denomina obsessions.
A més, aquests pensaments provoquen accions o rituals repetits que serveixen per “poder fer front” a les esmentades obsessions, anomenats compulsions. Alguns exemples de compulsions serien: rentar-se les mans, els comportaments religiosos (com ara resar una pregària escrita exactament 15 vegades per evitar que passi res de dolent), comptar i supervisar les coses (p. ex., assegurar-te d’haver tancat la porta, el gas...).
Amb molta freqüència senten que “alguna cosa dolenta” passarà si no aconsegueixen realitzar les compulsions, per la qual cosa se senten “obligats” a dur-les a terme. Aquest fet els en genera molta ansietat i angoixa, ja que se senten responsables que pugui passar una desgràcia.
Poden arribar a desvincular-se de les activitats de la vida diària o evitar-les per complet a causa del temor a les obsessions o als comportaments compulsius.
També podrien arribar a tenir dificultats amb les activitats quotidianes (cuinar, netejar, banyar-se, etc.) i patir nivells d’ansietat més elevats.
