Galens Vall d'Hebron champion of the Ludus et amiticia league, 2018-2019 season.
Dr Ferran Morell, a pulmonologist from Vall d'Hebron, was the driving force behind the creation of a football team made up exclusively of doctors in 1973. Since its very beginnings, the team has had a long history both at home and abroad, using football as a way of meeting medical professionals from centres all over the world.
In 1973, a football team made up exclusively of doctors was formed in Barcelona and given the name Galens Vall d'Hebron because its first members were mainly doctors from the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital. Later on, doctors from other centres joined, leading to the name being changed to Galens Barcelona and, in international tournaments, to Galens Catalonia, in order to better identify the origin of its members. The founder of the team and the person in charge of organising the team to be able to play in the early years was Dr Ferran Morell, head of the Pneumology Service at that time. The team first played in the league for university professionals, then in the Carmelite league and, later, in the 3rd regional league of the Catalan Federation. From 1985 to the present day, Galens has participated in the Ludus et amiticia championship at the University of Barcelona (UB) sports ground, a league in which 12 teams from various faculties of the UB and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) play. From 1978 onwards, the Galens began to compete in international tournaments. As there were players who were not doctors taking part in some of these tournaments, the decision was taken by the organising body of Galens to stop playing in them and to organise the World Medical Football Championship (WMFC), which had strict rules to ensure that only players who were doctors could participate in the tournament. The 1995 WMFC was the first of 10 championships held in Barcelona. After that, the tournament became a travelling event and has been hosted in different countries in Europe and America. Galens is also more than a club because, beyond playing football, it has strengthened ties between colleagues in the same hospital, and also with colleagues in other hospitals in Catalonia, Spain and abroad. This good relationship has led to an improvement in the work within the hospital itself and to other benefits such as the exchange of medical information, the streamlining of patient consultations, rotation periods between different services and hospitals, and joint research and publications.
