La Societat Europea de Coloproctologia és una de les dues societats més rellevants a nivell internacional del seu sector.
El Dr. Eloy Espín, cap de la Unitat de Cirurgia de Còlon i Recte del Servei de Cirurgia General i Digestiva de l’Hospital Universitari Vall d’Hebron i investigador principal del Grup de Recerca en Cirurgia General del Vall d’Hebron Institut de Recerca (VHIR), ha estat nomenat president de la Societat Europea de Coloproctologia. Es tracta d’una de les dues societats d’aquest àmbit més rellevants a nivell internacional juntament amb l’American Society of Colon & Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS), i el seu objectiu és fomentar la formació i la recerca en coloproctologia i desenvolupar guies clíniques. Després d'haver exercit durant un temps com a president in waiting, ha estat instituït president de la Societat.
La trajectòria del Dr. Eloy Espín a Vall d’Hebron es remunta al 1998, quan va entrar com a cirurgià al Servei de Cirurgia General i Digestiva de l’Hospital Universitari Vall d’Hebron, i des del 2005 coordina la Unitat de Cirurgia de Còlon i Recte, una Unitat referent a nivell estatal i internacional. En aquest sentit, Vall d’Hebron és un dels vuit centres acreditats per ser formadors de robòtica colorectal a Europa i la Unitat està acreditada com a Unitat Avançada per la Societat Espanyola de Coloproctologia.
El 2001 el Dr. Eloy Espín va obtenir el Board Europeu de Coloproctologia (European Board of Coloproctology-UEMS) i des del 2008 és International Fellow de l'ASCRS. En l'actualitat és examinador del Board Europeu de Coloproctologia. En l’àmbit de la recerca i la divulgació, ha escrit 19 capítols de llibres, 55 articles en revistes espanyoles i 158 en revistes internacionals indexades i ha presentat més de 250 comunicacions en congressos nacionals i 150 en internacionals. Ha realitzat més de 150 ponències per invitació en cursos i congressos nacionals i internacionals. Ha participat en 9 projectes d'investigació finançats per organismes oficials espanyols o internacionals.
