La Societat Radiològica d’Amèrica del Nord ha atorgat el premi RSNA Travel Award a un treball de la Secció de Radiologia Músculo-Esquelètica de Vall d'Hebron basat en la possibilitat d’anticipar, a través de tècniques de diagnòstic per imatge, quins neurofibromes poden començar a malignitzar i esdevenir neurofibromes borderline o tumors malignes de la vaina dels nervis perifèrics (MPNST) de baix grau.
El projecte ha estat liderat per la Dra. Rosa Domínguez Oronoz, cap de Secció de Radiologia Músculo-Esquelètica de l'Hospital de Traumatologia Vall d’Hebron i investigadora del grup de recerca en Ressonància Magnètica i Neuroradiologia de l’Institut de Recerca del Vall d’Hebron (VHIR), amb l’ajut de la Dra. Cleofé Romagosa del Departament d’Anatomia Patològica i el Dr. Marc Simó Perdigó del Departament Medicina Nuclear, ambdós de l’Hospital Vall d’Hebron. El projecte ha estat possible gràcies a l'enfocament multidisciplinari degut a la importància del PET-TC i de l'anàlisi d'anatomia patològica en aquests tumors.
Cal destacar que el treball ha estat publicat per la revista Auntminnie, referent en el sector de radiologia. L’article inclou una entrevista a un dels autors del projecte, que és resident de quart any a l’Hospital Vall d’Hebron, el Dr. Joan Albert Prat Matifoll, qui descriu que “segons el nostre punt de vista la combinació entre ressonància magnètica i PET-TAC és essencial per diagnosticar, determinar l’extensió i monitorar l'evolució cap a formes més malignes dels múltiples neurofibromes en aquests pacients”.
Ara cal aconseguir més pacients i seguir monitorant aquells ja inclosos en la recerca, per descriure amb més detall quines són les modalitats d’imatge més sensibles i específiques per detectar canvis malignes i proporcionar tractaments o cirurgies menys agressives en el futur.
