Endocarditis Infecciosa

La endocarditis infecciosa  supone la presencia de una  infección microbiana en la superficie endocárdica (superficie interna) del corazón. Se trata de la infección cardiovascular más  frecuente y es muy importante debido a su potencial gravedad y a que tiene diferentes formas de presentación. La endocarditis infecciosa afecta fundamentalmente a las válvulas cardíacas, sean naturales o artificiales, aunque en ocasiones se puede producir en otras estructuras del corazón.

Se clasifican de acuerdo con el tiempo en que lleva establecida la infección (días, semanas o meses) y de acuerdo con la bacteria o microorganismo (levadura, hongo) que la causa.
