Transplants in adults Activity at Hospital Vall d’Hebron began in 1976 with an adult kidney transplant. We are one of the most active centres in organ and tissue transplants and participate in nine of the ten adult and paediatric solid organ transplant programmes in Spain. The joint work of the whole team and agreed decision-making are key in each case. The weekly clinical sessions discuss possible transplant candidates and make decisions about the most appropriate treatments for each person. Child and adult transplant teams are coordinated to ease the transition and integration of paediatric patients to adulthood. At Vall d’Hebron, the first liver transplant in adults was carried out in 1988, three years later than the first liver transplanted in a child. In 1990, the first lung transplant was carried out in the hospital for adults in Spain. However, it was not until 1998 that the first lung could be transplanted in paediatric patients. Adult transplant programmes Hospital Vall d’Hebron is an authorised centre for kidney, liver, cardiac and intestinal transplants. It is also the only centre in Catalonia to carry out lung transplants.
