The Spinal Cord Injuries Area at the Traumatology, Rehabilitation, and Burn Hospital is a reference center for acute and traumatic spinal cord injuries in Catalonia and Andorra, caring for both adults and children, as well as other etiologies. The multidisciplinary team includes rehabilitation physicians, nurses, nursing assistants, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and orderlies, with support from other specialists. The area provides physiotherapy and occupational therapy for both inpatients and outpatients and conducts follow-up during the acute phase and for chronic complications through outpatient clinics. It also participates in teaching and research, including multicenter studies and professional training courses.
The role of the advanced practice nurse is particularly notable, providing specialized care, supporting families, and assisting other units and primary care. The area emphasizes humanized, patient- and family-centered care, enhancing communication, well-being, and quality of life throughout the rehabilitation process.
