Children's Hospital

In both basic healthcare treatments and highly complex specialties, we place children at the centre of care in order to provide comprehensive assistance. We are currently a child-focused hospital, internationally recognised and a reference centre in Catalonia.

At the Children’s Hospital, we cover all medical specialties, from basic care to highly specialised third-level services. We are the children’s hospital with the greatest capacity to manage complex paediatric conditions in Spain.

We offer specific and advanced treatments in neonatology, paediatric transplantation and cardiac surgery. In addition, we specialise in areas such as cystic fibrosis and fetal surgery, and we are a leading centre in paediatric oncohaematology, neurology, rare diseases, respiratory medicine, nephrology, burns care and minimally invasive surgery.

We ensure continuity of care through a multidisciplinary approach, supported by close coordination with the other three Vall d’Hebron hospitals, from the fetal stage through to adulthood.

We carry out translational research, bringing patients’ diseases into the laboratory in order to improve diagnosis and treatment. Our medical professionals are also researchers involved in numerous national and international projects, enabling patients to be among the first to benefit from the most advanced therapies.

The Adolescent-to-Adult Transition Programme ensures a gradual, planned and coordinated transfer from paediatric care to adult services. This process supports young people in gaining autonomy in managing their health and guarantees continuity of specialised care. The transition includes preparation, transfer and integration into adult services, and is carried out with the support of a multidisciplinary team working closely with patients and their families.

In the field of highly complex paediatric care requiring long-term treatment, the Parc d’Atencions – the Paediatric Oncology and Haematology Day Hospital – stands out. Opened in 2015, it is the first facility of its kind in Spain, in terms of size and characteristics, dedicated exclusively to the care of children with cancer. It comprises 500 square metres and includes twelve treatment stations, four consultation rooms, a clinical trials unit, an examination room with anaesthetic support, and an area for admitting children with immunosuppression.

We offer extensive expertise and knowledge in the service of children and their families, with a holistic, patient-centred approach that incorporates emotional support to enhance quality of life.

We promote the active involvement of children and their families, working as a team with healthcare professionals to manage the disease and the challenges it poses for everyday life.

In 2021, the Multidisciplinary Paediatric Day Hospital was launched in the same location as the former Day Hospital, with expanded facilities made possible by the relocation of older consultation rooms to the new Paediatric Outpatient Clinics, opened on 18 December 2020. These facilities are designed to improve the quality of life of patients and their families, allowing diagnostic tests and the administration of parenteral medication without the need for hospital admission.

The service provides care for complex chronic patients (such as those with primary or secondary immunodeficiencies or rare diseases), chronic patients (such as those with diabetes or asthma), and acute patients who require occasional treatment, care or diagnostic tests.
