Vall d’Hebron Hospital performs the first intestinal transplant in Catalonia

The hospital successfully performed the first intestinal transplant in Catalonia, a rare type of transplant due to the complexity of the technique.

March 2008

It took place in March 2008. The patient was a 38-year-old man who, at the time of the operation, weighed only 53 kilograms despite being 1.85 metres tall. He had been unable to eat by mouth for 18 months because his small intestine and part of his colon had been removed due to a twisted bowel that had led to necrosis of the organ. Since then, he had to be fed with synthetic nutrients via a catheter, which led to numerous complications. It was the progressive deterioration that led to the decision to carry out the transplant.

The operation lasted over 12 hours and was performed by the team from the Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery and Transplant Department, led by Dr Ramon Charco. This was the first time an intestinal transplant had been performed in Catalonia.
