A new Surgical Block equipped with 19 operating rooms replaces the old rooms from the 1950s

The new Surgical Block, with a pioneering model in Europe, represented a technological and quality leap, as it improves efficiency and safety.

September 2016

In September 2016, the new Surgical Block of the General Hospital was launched, a 10,000 square meter space where 19 operating rooms equipped with cutting-edge technology, neurosurgery navigators, 3D imaging systems, integrated ultrasound and the Da Vinci Xi robot are located. With this incorporation, the Vall d’Hebron Hospital was the first in the State to have two operating rooms equipped with Da Vinci robotic technology for clinical use.

The surgical technology incorporated in the new block represented a great improvement both for patients, because it allowed less aggressive operations that reduced intervention and postoperative time, and for professionals, because having new high-tech surgical techniques made their work more precise.

But the Surgical Block is much more than a space equipped with the most cutting-edge technology. It is an innovative space, designed for patients and also designed so that professionals can carry out their work in the best conditions. It is a space where thousands of surgeries are performed every year, which are, therefore, thousands of stories.

The Surgical Block was planned according to an advanced process management model, with the participation of the professionals who work there. This involved the standardization of all surgical processes, agreeing on a single technique for each type of operation, which allowed the entire system to be perfected and the entire Block to gain efficiency and safety.

In addition to the operating rooms, the Surgical Block includes two rooms for patient care before and after undergoing an intervention. The objective of the Pre and Post Anesthesia Recovery Unit (URPA) is to optimize the use of the surgical area, since until then the patient fell asleep and woke up in the operating room.

With the launch of this new Surgical Block, Vall d'Hebron has one of the best surgical blocks in Europe, and is at the forefront internationally.
