We are the combination of four hospitals: the General Hospital, the Children’s Hospital, the Women’s Hospital and the Traumatology, Rehabilitation and Burns Hospital. We are part of the Vall d’Hebron Barcelona Hospital Campus: a world-leading health park where healthcare plays a crucial role.
Patients are the centre and the core of our system. We are professionals committed to quality care and our organizational structure breaks down the traditional boundaries between departments and professional groups, with an exclusive model of knowledge areas.

The Infectious Pathology and Immunodeficiencies Unit of Paediatrics is a hospitalisation unit dedicated to the study and treatment of these diseases in children, and also acts as a consultancy in the diagnosis and control of complex infections in immunosuppressed patients. It was created in January 1996 for the study and treatment of paediatric diseases of infectious origin, but over time, the increase in cases of children with infections, for various reasons, means the Unit has taken over more functions to face new challenges.
In our Unit, we treat infants with infections and immunodeficiencies, a pathology that has become increasingly important in recent years. This increase in cases is due to several reasons, such as the emergence of AIDS, the emergence of almost forgotten pathogens, the importing of diseases from other geographical areas, the increase in opportunistic infections as a consequence of more aggressive treatments and more invasive diagnostic techniques, and the presence of new patterns of microbial resistance. This is in addition to the significant differences between treating children and adults.
The Breast Pathology Unit is part of the Gynaecology Department, and falls within the Breast Centre of the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital. It is a reference centre for the surrounding area and Catalonia as a whole, as well as being one of the centres in Spain with the highest number of patients treated for breast cancer. It carries out both healthcare and research activity.
Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women. It is estimated that 1 in 10 women will develop breast cancer throughout their lives. At Vall d'Hebron, we offer multidisciplinary treatment that guarantees quality care. We apply techniques using conservative surgery and aesthetic reconstruction of patients.
The Nutrition Support Unit is made up of a multidisciplinary, multiprofessional health team, composed of doctors from different specialties, nursing graduates, nutritionist dietitians, technical dieticians, nursing assistants and administrative staff. We are also a cross-cutting unit in that we support a range of other Departments. Our work in training and education is also significant.
We give nutritional and diet support to hospitalised patients across all clinical departments at the Hospital, and carry out follow-up monitoring at outpatient care for those patients who need it. We also provide outpatient care for patients referred from other healthcare areas of the Hospital and primary care centres that require specialist nutritional and dietary support. Patients requiring nutritional support are treated at the Horta Primary Care Centre.
The objective of this Unit is to offer comprehensive care in the diagnosis of sleep pathologies, in order to cover all areas: sleep pathology, hypersomnia, insomnia, parasomnia and circadian disorders, for patients of all ages. These disorders represent a public health problem, due to the increase in the number of cases and the social and health consequences they have.
Sleep disorders require a multidisciplinary approach when it comes to diagnosing and treating such problems. This has been accepted for some years now, both nationally and internationally. These pathologies are: excessive daytime sleep or hypersomnia, difficulty sleeping or insomnia and somnambulism, sleep talking, nightmares, which are part of the parasomnia group, or circadian alterations, which is when periodic biological variables are altered.
At the Emergency Department of the Maternity and Children's Hospital, we care for paediatric, gynaecological and obstetric emergencies.
At the Gynaecological and Obstetric Emergency Department, we provide care for both gynaecological and obstetric emergencies. To do so, we have a professional team of gynaecology and obstetrics doctors. We also boast a number of anaesthetists, residents, midwives, nurses, assistants and paediatricians. We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The Paediatric Urology Unit is a part of the Paediatric Surgery Department, and mainly deals with kidney and urinary tract abnormalities in children and adolescents. We offer minimally invasive surgery in the treatment of kidney abnormalities and urinary tracts with a focus on the use of robotic techniques for the treatment of so-called "pyeloureteral stenosis", which is a congenital ureter malformation.
Our Unit is a pioneer in the treatment of sexual differentiation disorders at the paediatric age. We are also a renowned centre for paediatric renal transplants, and lead the way in Catalonia, especially in complex kidney transplants or transplants in combination with other organs.
The Cardiology Department Haemodynamics Unit diagnoses and treats diseases of the coronary artery, other parts of the heart, such as valves, and congenital defects. The majority of these procedures are carried out by inserting a catheter into the radial artery in the arm. In a few cases, it is inserted into the arteries in the leg.
The Vall d’Hebron Haemodynamics Unit is a centre of excellence with extensive experience in coronary procedures. It has three theatres for operations, one of which is shared with the Arrhythmia Unit. Another one is used for hybrid procedures, with simultaneous participation of specialists in haemodynamics and experts in cardiac surgery.
The primary mission of the Gynecology, Obstetrics, and Reproductive Medicine Service is to provide a permanent, up-to-date, and high-level service to all women in our area of influence. Additionally, as a tertiary-level hospital, we are committed to being leaders in various techniques and technologies. We care for pregnant women, prioritizing the health of both the mother and the future baby, while always respecting the mother’s wishes, whether she desires a natural birth or a cesarean delivery.
We are a reference center, particularly in oncological pathology, including both breast and lower female genital tract cancers, as well as endometriosis and pelvic floor disorders. These are complex conditions that are addressed from a multidisciplinary perspective. Thanks to the involvement of multiple specialists, we provide care of the highest quality.
The Pediatric Endocrinology Unit has established itself through its clinical, teaching, and research work as one of the most prestigious and highly recognized units at both national and international levels, as evidenced by the publication of a large number of articles in high-impact journals.
The Unit was established in 1968, in the early years of the Hospital, by Dr. Enric Vicens-Calvet, and has been a driving force in the development of pediatric endocrinology as a specialty. It has actively participated in the founding of the Spanish Society of Pediatric Endocrinology and the International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD).
In addition to the subspecialties that are traditionally related to the field, the Gynaecology Department at Vall d'Hebron University Hospital has for several years now also incorporated gynaecological endoscopic surgery: laparoscopy and hysteroscopy. These account for almost 50% of the scheduled operations performed by the Department and most of them are carried out as outpatients, in the day hospital.
This unit carries out diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of benign gynaecological pathologies that require surgical treatment using laparoscopic treatment.
The Major Outpatient Surgery Unit is located on the 3rd floor of the Women’s Hospital, next to the three operating theatres where the Endoscopy Unit and Post-Surgical Resuscitation Division carry out most of their operations.
