Preventive Medicine finds a place at Vall d'Hebron Hospital

The Preventive Medicine and Epidemiology Service of Vall d'Hebron Hospital has been a pioneer in Catalonia and Spain in the organization of epidemiological surveillance systems for nosocomial infections, and in the surveillance and prevention of biological risk in healthcare personnel.

April 1976

The Preventive Medicine and Epidemiology Service of Vall d’Hebron was created in 1976, just three years after INSALUD created the figure of the Hospital Preventive Medicine Service. It was the first service of this type created in Catalonia and the second at a national level. Dr. Pedro Díez Domínguez was the first head of service, but he held the position for a few months, which was later taken over by Dr. Joaquim Oromí.

It has always been a transversal service, which has supported all the services of the Hospital. Initially, its functions were occupational health, that is, carrying out medical check-ups of the staff, and hospital hygiene.

From 1984, under the direction of Dr. Josep Vaqué, many changes took place in the Service: the surveillance and control of nosocomial infections in the Hospital was widely developed and the International Health Center was created, the breast cancer screening program aimed at women in the Vall d'Hebron health area and the Vall d'Hebron tumor registry were created.

In 1990, the EPINE program for surveillance of nosocomial infections was launched, which later extended to all of Catalonia and all of Spain, and of which Vall d'Hebron was the coordinator. It could be said that this was the first stone of epidemiological surveillance within hospitals.

The VINCAT program for surveillance of infections in pediatric and neonatal ICUs in Catalonia was also launched, of which Vall d’Hebron is now the coordinator, and the Vaccination Unit was created, especially for patients with high risk of infection admitted to the hospital (oncology, hematology, transplants, very premature babies).

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Preventive Medicine and Epidemiology Service, led at the time by Dr. Magda Campins, took on a major role and led the enormous challenge of responding to an unprecedented health crisis.
