The inauguration of the Children’s Hospital provided a dedicated centre for paediatric care

The Children’s Hospital began operations in 1966 (at the same time as the Maternity Clinic) under the directorship of Dr Ángel Ballabriga, a highly renowned paediatrician. The centre had state-of-the-art facilities for the time and quickly gained significant prestige.

February 1966

In addition to diagnostic and treatment services, the centre featured a neonatal surgery unit with three operating theatres, an infectious diseases unit with total isolation chambers, a premature births unit, nursing wards and a playroom. The Children’s Hospital was directly connected to the maternity clinic, ensuring that newborns could be attended by paediatricians without being completely separated from their mothers.

Everyone who knew Dr Ángel Ballabriga acknowledges his contributions as the head of the Children’s Hospital, which became a model institution and a pioneer in certain areas of healthcare, earning notable international recognition. They also remember his encyclopaedic knowledge, his passion for teaching and his disciplined, methodical approach.

Under his leadership, one of the areas that gained great significance was neonatology, one of Dr Ángel Ballabriga’s passions. Initially, in the late 1970s, neonatology was divided into two main areas: the premature unit, which cared exclusively for infants born at the hospital, and the pathological newborn unit, which treated infants from other centres in the city.

Also of note was the Paediatric Surgery Service, which, under Dr José Boix-Ochoa, was structured as dedicated department covering all paediatric surgery specialities, where efforts were made for each surgeon to specialise in specific areas to achieve the highest possible levels of expertise.
