La Síndrome de Cushing (SC) és una condició caracteritzada per un excés prolongat de cortisol en l'organisme. Pot tenir un origen exogen, quan és causat per tractaments prolongats amb corticosteroides, o endogen, quan és el propi cos qui produeix quantitats excessives d'aquesta hormona. Dins dels casos endogens, la malaltia de Cushing (MC) és la forma més comuna i sol estar causada per un adenoma hipofisiari productor d’ACTH. S'estima que la incidència del SC oscil·la entre 1 cas per cada 12.658 a 17.544 persones a l'any, amb un major predomini en dones i una edat mitjana de diagnòstic al voltant dels 40 anys.
