The aim of this project is to optimise the screening of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in the asymptomatic population. The Drassanes-Vall d’Hebron STI Unit, together with the Microbiology Laboratory, is the main centre in Catalonia for screening and care for this type of pathology, with around forty thousand visits a year.
The Drassanes Exprés programme helps to meet demand, avoids saturation of services and extends access so the vulnerable population can receive a quick diagnosis and early treatment. Enter the programme: vhc.cat/pacientsdrassanes
This “fast track” gives users direct access, without the need for referral from their GP.
Notable improvements that come with Drassanes Exprés include obtaining lab results in under three hours. In positive cases, people are treated within a maximum of 48-72 hours.

There is a team of medical experts specialising in infectious diseases who work from the centre of Barcelona. The clinic is open to all ages, including children and babies. The medical professionals at the Drassanes Vall d'Hebron Centre for International Health and Infectious Diseases specialise in the detection and treatment of infectious diseases, from sexually transmitted diseases to illnesses brought in from abroad. Early detection and rapid response are the characteristic features of the centre.
A new, innovative healthcare model: This programme has created a new rapid screening circuit for HIV and STIs. It allows asymptomatic and vulnerable users to access them easily, increases the efficiency of the system and reduces the saturation of healthcare in public health centres. It is part of the strategic framework for the Generalitat of Catalonia’s 2016-2020 Health Plan and is subsidised with European FEDER funds.
In this healthcare area, all patients with symptomatology compatible with a sexually transmitted infection are treated immediately. They are provided with a rapid diagnosis, specific therapy (most of the time administered at the centre during the visit) and a specialist advisory service for primary prevention according to sexual practises.
The Unit also provides pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). PrEP is a comprehensive attention programme addressing the sexuality of people vulnerable to acquiring HIV, based on the administration of an anti-retroviral medication.
This programme is an early diagnosis and rapid response activity for sexually active asymptomatic people. A confidential test by appointment, when available, allows specific diagnostic tests to be carried out, with the results being sent by SMS or email in less than 6 hours. The test includes HIV, hepatitis C (depending on sexual activity), syphilis, gonorrhoea and chlamydia. If one of the tests carried out produces a positive result, the patient will immediately be offered a visit at the centre.
The centre has a Microbiology Laboratory with doctors and nurses specialising in all the diagnostic methodology related to the diseases or clinical situations covered by the clinic. The Microbiology Laboratory has played an essential role in the launch, maintenance and growth of the Drassanes Exprés programme.
