Després de la pausa durant l’estiu, reprenem els Seminaris IRISCAT! El proper dimecres 8 de setembre a les 16.00 hores, el Dr. Gerard Muntané, investigador de l’Hospital Universitari Institut Pere Mata - IISPV, presentarà “Pleiotropia i malalties humanes complexes”.
Les malalties complexes tenen una arquitectura altament poligènica amb una gran superposició genètica amb altres malalties. L'arquitectura genètica subjacent de malalties comunes suggereix que les malalties humanes estan molt més relacionades del que s'esperava, suggerint una pleiotropia substancial entre variants genètiques que contribueixen, que sovint mostren direccions oposades. És probable que els al·lels de risc de malaltia puguin afectar els pacients mitjançant complicades relacions pleiotròpiques augmentant o reduint el risc de malalties comòrbides, o viceversa, o fins i tot afectant la seva esperança de vida.

El Dr. Gerard Muntané va obtenir un doctorat en biologia en l’estudi de trastorns neurològics el 2010. Després, es va traslladar als Estats Units a la Universitat George Washington per estudiar l’evolució del cervell. El 2015 es va incorporar al Laboratori de Genòmica Evolutiva de la Universitat Pompeu Fabra amb la beca postdoctoral Beatriu de Pinós per l'estudi de la genòmica comparativa de l’envelliment. El 2018 es va incorporar a l’Institut d’Investigació Sanitària Pere Virgili (IISPV), on dirigeix la línia de recerca centrada en la genòmica evolutiva dels trastorns psiquiàtrics.
