Els pacients amb artritis inflamatòries cròniques (AIC) tenen un risc incrementat d'infeccions tant per la disregulació de el sistema immune com pel tractament immunosupressor. En el moment inicial de l'actual pandèmia per COVID-19, hi havia una necessitat per part de la comunitat reumatològica de conèixer quin impacte podia tenir la infecció per SARS-CoV-2 i quina estratègia s'havia de seguir quant a el tractament immunosupressor selectiu (ISS) . El grup de recerca de reumatologia de la Vall d'Hebron va dissenyar el primer estudi observacional en pacients amb AIC per determinar la incidència de COVID-19 comparat amb la població general
CV: El Dr. Xabier Michelena Vegas és facultatiu especialista en Reumatologia de la Secció de Reumatologia de l'Hospital Universitari Vall d'Hebron i investigador pre-doctoral al centre d'excel·lència EULAR Leeds Institute of Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Medicine (LIRMM). La seva àrea d'interès són les espondiloartritis incloent l'artritis psoriàsica i la espondiloartritis axial. Compagina la seva tasca assistencial en la Secció de Reumatologia amb la seva activitat investigadora en el Grup de Recerca de Reumatologia i presta els seus serveis en el Servei d'Urgències. Forma part de la Unitat d'Inflamació i Autoimmunitat de la Secció de Reumatologia on desenvolupa la seva activitat centrada en el seguiment altament especialitzat dels pacients amb espondiloartritis. Actualment, forma part del grup de treball de EMEUNET (the emerging EULAR network) i ha rebut les prestigioses beques de FOREUM (Foundation for Research in Rheumatology) i de NANSES (Assessment of Spondyloarthritis International Society) que li han permès desenvolupar projectes de recerca en epidemiologia i imatge en l'àmbit de les espondiloartritis.
