The Hepatology department offers the best medical care and attention to patients with liver disease, for both hospitalised and out-patients, and inter-hospital consultations. The department is part of the new Digestive Diseases knowledge area, together with the Gastroenterology and Endoscopy departments.
The department works closely with the liver transplant programme, together with the Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery and Digestive System Transplants departments. It also works with other units, such as the Haemophilia unit, the Endocrinology department, the adult congenital heart disease section in the Cardiology department, Interventional Radiology and Clinical Biochemistry, among others.
The Hepatology Department is closely involved in both basic and clinical research into liver disease. The Liver Disease research group is part of the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) and one of the leading groups in the institution, with a high level of participation in clinical trials and scientific production.
From 2016 to 2021, the group took part in 50 clinical trials, making it one of the most active groups in clinical research into these diseases in Spain.
The research group is a member of the CIBERehd network, the Biomedical Research Networking Centre into Liver and Digestive Diseases, and collaborates in the following areas:
With regard to teaching, the members of the Department are involved in teaching medical residents (tutorials), medical degree teaching from fourth to sixth year with the Autonomous University of Barcelona; postgraduate teaching (doctoral theses) after the residency and providing research fellowships and continuing education.
