Obesity is a chronic disease related to excess or dysfunction of adipose tissue, which requires a medical and continuous approach throughout life.
Historically, obesity has been seen as a risk factor or a lifestyle choice rather than a disease. Current scientific evidence shows that it is a multifactorial chronic condition, characterized by excess and/or dysfunction of adipose tissue, which can affect health and reduce life expectancy. For this reason, prevention is key in patients with obesity or genetic predisposition.
For patients with obesity, we use the Mediterranean diet model, but we work with a fully personalized approach. That is, we take the Mediterranean diet as a base and adapt it to the patient’s preferences, allergies and intolerances, underlying medical conditions, laboratory values, and data obtained from body composition assessment and metabolic measurements, so that the plan is unique and focused on achieving the goals agreed with the patient.
That said, there is no general recommended diet, each plan is specific to each individual.
Regarding exercise, a similar approach is taken:
In addition, since we have a rehabilitation physician and physiotherapist on our team, those patients with greater difficulties in performing exercise due to medical conditions or physical limitations are referred for an individual assessment and for the design of a more specific exercise or rehabilitation plan.
