We are the combination of four hospitals: the General Hospital, the Children’s Hospital, the Women’s Hospital and the Traumatology, Rehabilitation and Burns Hospital. We are part of the Vall d’Hebron Barcelona Hospital Campus: a world-leading health park where healthcare plays a crucial role.
Patients are the centre and the core of our system. We are professionals committed to quality care and our organizational structure breaks down the traditional boundaries between departments and professional groups, with an exclusive model of knowledge areas.
Would you like to know what your stay at Vall d'Hebron will be like? Here you will find all the information.
The commitment of Vall d'Hebron University Hospital to innovation allows us to be at the forefront of medicine, providing first class care adapted to the changing needs of each patient.
Transient elastography (TE) is reliable for the diagnosis of liver cirrhosis (stage 4 fibrosis or F4) and significant fibrosis (fibrosis stage 2 or F2 or higher), although values may vary depending on patient characteristics and the etiology of the disease.
Transient elastography (TE) or FibroScan® is an imaging test that allows estimation of the degree of liver fibrosis. It also enables assessment of the degree of hepatic steatosis. It is a fast, safe, reliable, and non-invasive procedure; therefore, it is the method of choice for the study of multiple diseases.
Transient elastography (TE) or FibroScan® is used to determine the degree of liver fibrosis and to quantify the degree of hepatic steatosis. This test works in a way very similar to an ultrasound. The device has a transducer that emits pulsed waves and ultrasound. In addition, it includes a screen that processes the information and generates an image corresponding to an elastic wave that measures liver stiffness.
To undergo this test, the only preparation required is fasting for 4 hours beforehand. At the time of the examination, the patient will be positioned lying on their back, with the right arm raised above the head, the right leg crossed over the left, and a slight tilt toward the left side. The specialist will then place the device to take the corresponding measurements. The test lasts approximately 15 minutes. Measurements are taken on the right side, placing the device on the skin between the intercostal spaces, along the right mid-axillary line, and perpendicular to the plane of the skin.
The healthcare professional will take a minimum of 10 measurements and obtain the results immediately.
One of the main advantages of transient elastography (TE) or FibroScan® compared to other diagnostic tests is that it is risk-free. It is a non-invasive test, does not use radiation, and is not painful for the patient. It does not require hospitalization or anesthesia.
Currently, transient elastography is the most widely used non-invasive test for staging liver fibrosis, as it helps avoid a significant number of liver biopsies. However, in certain cases, liver biopsy is still necessary for the study of liver diseases.
The results are interpreted together with those of other medical tests, such as blood tests and abdominal ultrasound.
Transient elastography significantly contributes to reducing the need for liver biopsy, especially when combined with other non-invasive methods.
