The Sleep Unit provides comprehensive care for the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders in both children and adults. It specializes in the management of sleep-related breathing disorders, hypersomnias, insomnia, parasomnias, and circadian rhythm sleep disorders. Due to their high prevalence and significant impact on health and quality of life, these conditions represent an important public health issue.
Sleep disorders require a multidisciplinary approach when it comes to diagnosing and treating such problems. This has been accepted for some years now, both nationally and internationally. These pathologies are: excessive daytime sleep or hypersomnia, difficulty sleeping or insomnia and somnambulism, sleep talking, nightmares, which are part of the parasomnia group, or circadian alterations, which is when periodic biological variables are altered.
The Sleep Unit is part of the Pneumology Department and is a wide-reaching functional unit, which helps to ensure continuity of care at different levels, primary and hospital care, coordinated by two medical specialties that have been linked to this pathology for more than 25 years.
Care is provided through outpatient consultations, that are currently distributed between the ground floor, second floor and the Paediatrics Outpatient Department, and the second floor annex, where all the examinations are carried out. The Unit is also responsible for significant teaching activity, and pursues several lines of research.
The Sleep Unit is accredited by the Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery as a high-complexity multidisciplinary unit. This is the highest level awarded by the entity, making Vall d'Hebron one of the few centres in Spain to boast the two accreditations that currently exist nationally, as since 2011 we have also enjoyed the highest level of competence from the Spanish Medical Accreditation Committee for Sleep Disorders (CEAMS).
In addition, we are the ICS unit with the largest number of patients receiving home mechanical ventilation, making us a referral center for the care of people with neuromuscular diseases and other sleep-related breathing disorders requiring this type of respiratory support.
At the Sleep Unit, we perform diagnostic tests to assess sleep disorders in both adults and children. We are the only ICS unit that provides sleep studies for both adult and pediatric patients, allowing us to deliver specialized care throughout all stages of life.
This is the most comprehensive test for diagnosing sleep disorders. It simultaneously records brain activity, breathing, heart rate, body movements, and oxygen levels during sleep, complemented by video recording when necessary.
This test evaluates the tendency to fall asleep during the day through several scheduled nap opportunities. It is essential for objectively assessing excessive daytime sleepiness and diagnosing hypersomnia disorders, such as narcolepsy.
This test measures the patient's ability to remain awake in low-stimulation situations. It is used to assess certain sleep disorders and evaluate the effectiveness of treatment.
This test is used to diagnose sleep-related breathing disorders, particularly obstructive sleep apnea, using portable monitoring equipment that the patient uses at home.
The Sleep Unit offers specialized outpatient clinics for the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of the different sleep disorders.
We also provide a dedicated Insomnia Clinic, the only one within the ICS, where patients receive Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), the first-line treatment for chronic insomnia.
The Sleep Unit is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of neurophysiologists and pulmonologists from the Department of Pulmonology.
