We lead the solid organ transplantation activity in adults and paediatrics. Always with the maximum guarantees of quality, safety and efficiency in order to offer a high level of health protection and an improvement in the quality of life of patients who need a transplant.
The Coordination of Donation and Transplantation Programmes is made up of medical staff, specialised nursing professionals, auxiliary technicians and administrative and research support staff.
Our mission is to manage and organise the donation and transplantation of organs and tissues with the highest standards of quality, safety and equity, with the aim of improving the survival and quality of life of adult and paediatric patients.
We are directly responsible for managing care and the logistics and safety associated with the donation and transplantation process. We continuously monitor organ and tissue donation from both deceased and living donors.
Donor detection and assessment
We monitor potential donors on a daily basis in the Intensive Care Unit, Emergency Department, Stroke Unit, Resuscitation Unit, operating theatres and hospital wards. We have alert systems in place to identify cases of severe brain injury or cardiac arrest that may result in donation. We also systematically review hospital deaths to identify potential tissue donors, including in paediatric and neonatology settings.
The donor assessment includes a detailed clinical history and tests to rule out transmissible diseases and ensure that donation can be carried out safely and effectively.
Family and legal procedures
We ensure that death is properly confirmed in accordance with current legislation. We conduct interviews with families to establish the patient’s wishes, obtain consent and provide appropriate support and accompaniment. Where necessary, we also manage the relevant judicial authorisations.
Donor care and preservation
We provide specialised, state-of-the-art clinical support during donor maintenance before organ retrieval and throughout the procedure. Our aim is to provide the donor with the highest level of care and ensure that the organs remain in the best possible condition.
Logistics and coordination
We coordinate organ allocation with the Catalan Transplant Organisation (OCATT) and the National Transplant Organisation (ONT). We coordinate the logistics of the process, the safety of the surgical team and the transport of organs. We supervise organ retrieval, packaging and preservation in the operating theatre, ensuring efficiency and quality throughout the process.
Quality, biovigilance and safety
We record every step of the process and prioritise safety before, during and after transplantation. We notify incidents and participate in the hospital’s transplant and biovigilance committees. We carry out periodic controls and implement solutions aimed at improving efficiency and quality.
We apply strict procedures to the living-donor process to ensure the health and safety of donors and recipients.
We conduct scientific research and technological development in the field of donation and transplantation. We coordinate the VHIR research group Donation and Transplantation of Organs, Tissues and Cells.
We participate in publicly and privately funded projects aimed at optimising the donation, preservation, processing and transplantation of organs, tissues and cells, with the aim of increasing their availability, functionality, quality and safety.
We also investigate ischaemia-reperfusion injury and develop strategies for its prevention, reduction and treatment.
We provide training programmes on donation and transplantation in end-of-life care for medical and nursing professionals.
We have our own Moodle platform, through which more than 400 professionals receive training each year through publicly and privately subsidised courses at national and international level.
We also provide information to the public about donation and transplantation and the Spanish donation and transplantation model, which has been a worldwide pioneer for more than three decades. Its success is the result of the generosity of society as a whole.
