Paediatric Ophthalmology

Oftalmologia Pediàtrica a Vall d'Hebron

The Paediatric Ophthalmology Unit of the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital of Barcelona is a part of the Ophthalmology Department, and specialises in treating ocular pathologies that affect paediatric patients. Our staff includes three dedicated doctors specialising in ophthalmology with specialised training in paediatric eye pathologies.

At the Paediatric Ophthalmology Unit, we treat ocular pathologies that affect children under the age of 16. We collaborate closely with the Ophthalmology Department and we are in constant contact with other paediatric units as we treat and monitor children with systemic diseases that may affect the eyes, such as juvenile idiopathic arthritis, intracranial hypertension and neurofibromatosis.

We are the leading centre in Spain for the diagnosis and treatment of intraocular tumours.

The problems we diagnose, monitor and treat include:

  • Problems with lenses (refraction defects)
  • Lazy eye (amblyopia)
  • Deviation of one or both eyes (strabismus)
  • Tear duct pathologies
  • Eyelid and socket pathologies. We are now a national reference centre for orbital tumours in children
  • Paediatric cataracts
  • Problems of the ocular surface
  • Intraocular inflammation
  • Retinal medical pathologies
  • Intraocular tumours We are a national reference centre for intraocular tumours in children
  • Retinopathy associated with prematurity
  • Problems related to the optic nerve and the visual pathway (paediatric neurophthalmology)
