The pediatric kidney transplant program was launched in 1981 and was the first in Catalonia

This kidney transplant at Vall d’Hebron was also the first pediatric transplant carried out in Catalonia.

April 1981

In 1981, the first pediatric kidney transplant in Catalonia was performed by hospital professionals. After more than 40 years of activity, Vall d’Hebron has carried out over 400 pediatric kidney transplants.

The launch of the pediatric kidney transplant program was led by Dr. Lluís Callís, trained at the Necker Enfants-Malades Hospital in Paris, where pediatric kidney transplants were already being performed at the time. The program also benefited from experience in adult transplants, which began in 1976, the extensive knowledge of pediatric urology of Dr. Rafael Gosálbez, and the support of vascular surgeons.

Vall d’Hebron Hospital was the first center in Catalonia to perform a pediatric kidney transplant and the second in Spain, after La Fe Hospital in Valencia.

The first transplants faced some challenges, but they paved the way for a successful path that has allowed, over the years, many children and adolescents to have a second chance at life. Currently, Vall d’Hebron has performed more than 400 pediatric kidney transplants.
