Gianluca Pellino has an M.D. degree. He is Ph.D. in Traslational Medicine. He has completed two master degrees (Statistics and Methodology of Research; IBD and Colorectal Surgery). He is currently serving as staff surgeon and research coordinator at the Colorectal Unit, Department of General and Digestive Surgery, Vall d'Hebron University Hospital, Barcelona and is Associate Professor in General Surgery at Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona UAB. He has served as Colorectal Surgeon at the Unit of Colorectal Surgery of University Hospital "La Fe", Valencia, Spain, as 2017 European Coloproctology Fellow. Dr Pellino has studied medicine at the Medical University of Naples and graduated in 2008. He completed the Residency Programme in General Surgery in 2016. He completed the ESCP 6-month Fellowship 2016 at the Colorectal Surgery Unit of the Royal Marsden Hospital, London. He attended the St. Mark's Hospital, Harrow, London in 2017 with an Erasmus+ Traineeship placement. Since 2019, he is Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS), and since 2022 Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP). He is a Fellow of the European Board of Surgery (FEBS) in coloproctology upon passing the exam of the European Board of Surgical Qualification (EBSQ-c) in 2018. In 2018 he received the status of International Fellow of the American Society of Colorectal Surgeons (FASCRS), valid until 2023. In 2020 he became Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS). He is former Regional Representative (Campania) of the Italian Society of Colorectal Surgery (SICCR) and former Website Committee Member of the European Society of Coloproctology (ESCP). He served in the Guidelines Committee and Communication Committee of the ESCP, and is member of the ESCP Cohort Studies WG and of SICCR Research Committee. He has been co-chair of EuroSurg (2017-19), National co-Lead (Italy) for GlobalSurg 3 Study, and is local PI of several multicentric studies. He is vice-chair of ItSurg Collaborative. Dr Pellino was also Chairman of Young ESCP (2020-23) and Member of the Young Committee (Y-ECCO) of the European Crohn's and Colitis Organisation (ECCO), he is Member of the European Association for Endoscopic Surgery (EAES), Asociación Española de Coloproctología (AECP), Asociación Española de Cirujanos (AEC), Grupo Español de Trabajo en Enfermedad de Crohn y Colitis ulcerosa (GETECCU), Italian Group for the Study of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IG-IBD), Italian Society of Surgery (SIC), Japanese Society of Gastrointestinal Surgery (JSGS). He has written more than 300 journal articles in peer-reviewed journals and coauthored book chapters. His special interests are in inflammatory bowel diseases, colorectal cancer, and proctology, with particular emphasis on surgical treatment and training. He is the Reviewer of several journals, including the Lancet and British Journal of Surgery. He joins the Editorial Board of BJS Open, World Journal of Gastroenterology, Surgery, Updates in Surgery and is Associate Editor of Frontiers in Surgery. He has received the 2019 BJS Editor Assistant Bursary 2019. Since 2024, he is the Editor in Chief of International Journal of Colorectal Disease.
