The Rheumatology Department at Vall d'Hebron Hospital has a long and successful history of treating patients with immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMID). The IMIDs are a group of systemic illnesses that share common characteristics and are of unknown aetiology. Depending on which organ is most severely affected, different medical specialities are involved in caring for these patients. In addition, we have a wealth of experience in precision medical research in this area.
The Inflammation and Autoimmunity Unit is divided into three large departments:
Among the chronic joint diseases, we primarily find rheumatoid arthritis and spondyloarthritis, which includes axial spondyloarthritis and psoriatic arthritis.
The Rheumatology Department at Vall d'Hebron Hospital is a reference centre in patient care for these pathologies, seeing a large number of cases every year. In addition, we have a long history of studying this kind of disease: we have participated in many clinical trials and published in high-impact journals.
In this department, we maintain close relationships with different specialities, allowing for a multidisciplinary approach to caring for patients with complex diseases. We carry out consultations jointly with the Dermatology Department when dealing with patients with psoriatic arthritis, with the Digestive System Department's inflammatory intestinal disease team for cases of spondyloarthritis associated with inflammatory intestinal disease, and Ophthalmology for patients with both systemic diseases and eye issues.
For patients with chronic inflammatory arthritis, we offer quality care adapted to their needs, with a team of professionals who are experts in the latest biotechnological treatments, both in the day hospital and in specific outpatient clinics. We adapt our operations as much as we can to avoid a loss of work days for patients and to offer the highest level of excellence in our healthcare conditions. In recent times, with the constant changes made to patient care and the advent of teleworking due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the contact artritis.reumatologia@vhebron.net has been created for patients to be able to easily and directly get in touch with the professionals who see them when they require medical evaluation.
Currently, we are in the process of consolidating the Early Arthritis Unit (UAI), created to make early diagnoses and shorten waiting times for patients being referred from the primary medical care centres (CAP). The unit's main objective is to diagnose the illness at the onset to avoid joint damage and the loss of function associated with the progression of the joint disease.

We have developed a highly specialised patient care programme that covers these two large areas in a comprehensive manner during the pre-conception, pregnancy, and post-partum periods for these patients: the Consultation for pregnancy in patients with chronic inflammatory arthritis and systemic autoimmune diseases. With the aim of being able to plan and allow for pregnancy and birthing with the maximum safety guarantees for the mother and baby, without the inflammatory disease getting worse, we work in conjunction with the Gynaecology and Obstetrics Department at Vall d'Hebron Hospital. We are a pioneer centre in Spain for this kind of highly specialised care.
We also have the cross-cutting Selective Immunosuppressants Unit (UISS), from where we strictly and optimally monitor patients being treated with these pharmaceuticals. This control is carried out both from external clinics and the Day Hospital by professionals who are experts in each different disease and by a specialised nurse.
