The commitment of Vall d'Hebron University Hospital to innovation allows us to be at the forefront of medicine, providing first class care adapted to the changing needs of each patient.
The Clinical Trials Unit (UAC) within the Rheumatology Department was created in 2020 to provide support for clinical assays with medications that are backed by the pharmaceutical industry and research projects backed by investigators from the Rheumatology Department. Work is done in close collaboration with the USIC and other support units at Vall d'Hebron University Hospital (HUVH) and the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR).
Clinical assays compare current treatments with others that may be better. They also allow us to offer new drugs and therapeutic options to patients for whom there are currently no treatment alternatives. Besides offering new pharmaceuticals, we are also participating in studies that evaluate innovative treatments, such as transcutaneous nerve stimulation for rheumatoid arthritis.
The patients seen at the Rheumatology Department of Vall d'Hebron University Hospital are considered potential candidates to participate in our clinical assays. Although not all of the patients will be eligible and some may not be interested in participating in a study, this option is given to everyone who meets the criteria for taking part under the different research protocols. The UAC provides support in trials, both for adult and paediatric patients with rheumatic diseases.
In addition, they collaboratively participate in other clinical trials that are spearheaded by other departments at Vall d'Hebron University Hospital.
Even though the unit was created just two years ago, the number of patients starting a new treatment as part of a clinical trial has increased in every research line conducted by the Rheumatology Department. In 2021, more than 40 clinical trials (phases II, III, and IV) and research projects were carried out.
