Here we will review the highlights, from modern times right back to the beginning. 2023 World’s first fully robotic lung transplant using a new access route. 2022 Vall d’Hebron Hospital performs, for the first time in Spain, three lung transplants on the same person. 2022 Vall d’Hebron Hospital surpasses 1,000 paediatric transplants. 2021 First-ever extraction and transplantation of lungs from a baby donated in controlled cardiac arrest in Spain. 2020 A girl with an ultra-rare genetic mutation becomes the first paediatric patient in Spain to undergo triple heart, liver and kidney transplantation. 2020 The WHO mentions the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital for the serious management of the coronavirus. 2019 Vall d’Hebron, Bombers de la Generalitat and SEM save the life of a woman with severe hypothermia who was in cardiac arrest for over six hours. 2019 Presentation of the new brand Children's Hospital and Women's Hospital. 2018 We lead the birth of European University Hospital Alliance (EUHA). 2017 Presentation of the Vall d’Hebron Barcelona Hospital Campus Transformation Plan. 2016 Inauguration of the Surgical Block. 2016 Presentation of the Vall d'Hebron Barcelona Hospital Campus brand. 2015 60th anniversary of Vall d’Hebron University Hospital. 2015 Inauguration of the VHIO Laboratory. Cellex Building. 2014 First surgical treatment for spina bifida in Spain. 2013 New clinical laboratories, the result of joining together three laboratories: Manso, Bon Pastor and the laboratories of Vall d’Hebron University Hospital. 2012 Inauguration of the Multiple Sclerosis Center (Cemcat). 2012 Opening of the Cellex Theatre, a hybrid, state-of-the-art theatre funded by the Cellex Foundation that functions as an operating room and haemodynamic room. 2011 Successful separation of two siamese twins joined at the abdomen and liver. 2011 Inauguration of the new Paediatric ICU. 2010 World’s first full face transplant. 2010 Inauguration of the Collserola Building (VHIR), located on the upper part of the hospital campus 2008 First intestinal transplant in Catalonia. 2006 Creation of the Vall d'Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO). 2003 Inauguration of the Mediterrània Building of the Vall d’Hebron Research Institute. 2000 First lung transplant in Spain for an infant. 1998 Creation of the Catalan Pharmacology Institute Foundation, an organisation associated with Vall d'Hebron Hospital and the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). 1994 First umbilical cord blood transplant. 1994 First multiorgan liver and kidney transplant in Spain. 1994 Creation of the Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR). 1992 Vall d'Hebron signs the first contract with the Catalan Health Service. This was a vital step towards more business-like management of the hospital. 1991 Creation of the Catalan Health Service. 1990 First lung transplant in Spain. 1988 The Maternity and Children's Hospital comes into operation, the result of the fusion of the former Maternity Hospital and the Children's Clinic. 1985 First paediatric liver transplant in Spain. 1983 Constitution of the Catalan Health Institute (ICS) as the organisation responsible for managing the Social Security healthcare centres and services in Catalonia. 1981 First paediatric kidney transplant in Catalonia. 1981 The first case of HIV in Spain is diagnosed at Vall d’Hebron Hospital. 1981 Catalonia is the first region to take on devolved health competencies. 1971 Incorporation of the Hospital as a teaching unit with the UAB. 1970 First paediatric haemodialysis in Spain. 1968 Creation of the first paediatric Intensive Care Unit in Spain. 1967 Inauguration of the Maternity Hospital and the Children's Clinic. 1967 Inauguration of the Traumatology and Rehabilitation Hospital. 1966 The Nursing School is launched. The Vall d’Hebron nursing school pioneered the very definition of the nursing school in Spain. 1966 The halls of residence are converted into the Healthcare Complex. 1960 Incorporation of the first surgical teams to handle surgical emergencies and the first intern doctors. 1955 Vall d'Hebron General Hospital is inaugurated.
