We are the combination of four hospitals: the General Hospital, the Children’s Hospital, the Women’s Hospital and the Traumatology, Rehabilitation and Burns Hospital. We are part of the Vall d’Hebron Barcelona Hospital Campus: a world-leading health park where healthcare plays a crucial role.
Patients are the centre and the core of our system. We are professionals committed to quality care and our organizational structure breaks down the traditional boundaries between departments and professional groups, with an exclusive model of knowledge areas.
Would you like to know what your stay at Vall d'Hebron will be like? Here you will find all the information.
The commitment of Vall d'Hebron University Hospital to innovation allows us to be at the forefront of medicine, providing first class care adapted to the changing needs of each patient.
The primary mission of the Gynecology, Obstetrics, and Reproductive Medicine Service is to provide a permanent, up-to-date, and high-level service to all women in our area of influence. Additionally, as a tertiary-level hospital, we are committed to being leaders in various techniques and technologies. We care for pregnant women, prioritizing the health of both the mother and the future baby, while always respecting the mother’s wishes, whether she desires a natural birth or a cesarean delivery.
We are a reference center, particularly in oncological pathology, including both breast and lower female genital tract cancers, as well as endometriosis and pelvic floor disorders. These are complex conditions that are addressed from a multidisciplinary perspective. Thanks to the involvement of multiple specialists, we provide care of the highest quality.
We have the technology and infrastructure necessary to address all aspects of human reproduction and also care for women before pregnancy, during pregnancy, at the time of delivery, and in the postpartum period. Our priority is always to adapt to the needs of each woman. At such an important moment as childbirth, we listen to the mother and provide her with the tools she needs to make the decisions she considers appropriate.
Furthermore, for women who wish to become mothers and require technical assistance, we have a state-of-the-art assisted reproduction laboratory. We also offer the possibility of egg freezing for women diagnosed with cancer, provide care and support for women who have experienced recurrent miscarriages, and offer gynecological care for girls, adolescents, and women entering menopause or facing health issues. We are a global reference in prenatal diagnosis and intrauterine surgery. Overall, we are recognized for both our clinical excellence and our teaching and research contributions.
Delayed cord clamping is promoted, which involves allowing the newborn’s umbilical cord to continue pulsating after birth, in order to reduce the risk of anemia during the first year of life. Skin-to-skin contact, known as the kangaroo method, is also encouraged, which consists of placing the newborn directly on the mother’s skin.
Coordination with primary care and comprehensive care from the outset are fundamental aspects of the Gynecology, Obstetrics, and Reproductive Medicine Service. This is necessary for women of all ages, covering pediatric gynecology, pediatric endocrinology, gynecological pathologies, pelvic floor disorders, management of preinvasive lesions that may be precursors of cancer, malignant diseases of the genital tract and breast, menopause, and postmenopausal conditions.
Our general objective is to provide care to patients in our area of influence, including gynecological services, as well as health education and preventive measures. At the same time, we aim to become a center of excellence for certain conditions, such as a high-complexity surgical reference center.
The specific goals of the care area are, first, to provide medical attention as urgently as possible for presumably benign conditions. All patients with a suspected or confirmed diagnosis of neoplasia, whether gynecological or breast-related, must receive immediate care. Our service portfolio also includes cancer during pregnancy, both breast and gynecological.
In all cases, we aim to perform surgical treatment of gynecological and breast neoplasms when indicated, with the shortest possible waiting time, following the guidelines of the Catalonia Oncology Master Plan.
A cornerstone of the Service is the ability to perform fetal therapies in severe cases requiring surgery during gestation. Vall d’Hebron is the reference center for very high-risk pregnancies and also has extensive experience in ultrasound monitoring of pregnancies, both low- and high-risk.
Moreover, pregnant women with severe illnesses can give birth with the assurance of being in a hospital equipped with all the necessary specialties to manage any possible complications. For all these reasons, the Service is considered tertiary-level and highly qualified.
We care for a high proportion of very high-risk patients from all over Catalonia, other autonomous communities in Spain, and also from abroad. Additionally, we are part of the hospitals accredited by the European Board and College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (the only one in Spain) for our clinical, educational, and research excellence.
