The General and Digestive Surgery Department provides care for patients with digestive and surgical conditions through excellent technical and human-centred care, based on high specialisation, innovation and multidisciplinary teamwork.
The Department treats both elective and emergency surgical conditions affecting the digestive system, the abdominal wall, the endocrine system, the breast, the skin and soft tissues, the retroperitoneum, and external head and neck conditions. At the same time, it offers comprehensive care for patients with digestive diseases, ranging from outpatient care to highly complex processes.
The mission of the Department is to improve patients’ quality of life through the provision of the highest-quality care, the development of knowledge through research, and the transmission of knowledge and values through teaching.

The Surgical Block, equipped with cutting-edge technology, enables procedures to be performed in accordance with high standards of quality and safety, consolidating the Department as a benchmark in minimally invasive and robotic surgery.
The Department is involved in undergraduate medical education and has an accredited teaching unit for specialist training in General and Digestive Surgery within the MIR programme. It also collaborates in continuing education programmes and in European-level training initiatives through the European Training Centre of the European Board of Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
The Department carries out research activity in collaboration with various groups from the Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR), as well as with national and international research networks and programmes. This activity is recognised by competitive programmes such as AGAUR of the Government of Catalonia and contributes directly to improving the diagnosis and treatment of digestive and surgical diseases.
