First adult liver transplant at the Hospital

 Three years after performing the first paediatric liver transplant in Spain, Vall d’Hebron carried out the first adult liver transplant, following two years of preparation led by Dr Carles Margarit.

Acute childhood leukaemia

 Leukaemia is a type of cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow. It is the most common childhood cancer. In Spain, around 300 new cases are diagnosed each year, accounting for approximately one third of all paediatric malignant tumours.

The first kidney transplant in adults is performed at the hospital

 In 1976, Vall d’Hebron performed the first kidney transplant in an adult patient. This laid the foundation for a successful program that has since carried out over 2,000 kidney transplants.

The pediatric kidney transplant program was launched in 1981 and was the first in Catalonia

 This kidney transplant at Vall d’Hebron was also the first pediatric transplant carried out in Catalonia.
