Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy combines different types of specific medication to destroy cancerous cells. It acts on these cells that are rapidly reproducing, cancer cells and healthy cells, too. Chemotherapy is applied at intervals and the duration depends on the type of programme, control and treatment.

Lung transplant
Vall d'Hebron University Hospital is the only hospital in Catalonia to carry out lung transplants both in adults and children. This procedure is performed when a disease provokes chronic, severe and progressive respiratory insufficiency.

Blood transfusion
Before a blood transfusion, it is important to check that the blood type is compatible with that of the patient. The doctor in charge must assess the risks and benefits of the treatment for the patient, to avoid undesirable outcomes that may be mild or severe.

ECMO
ECMO, or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, is a technique used for patients in a critical condition and with very severe respiratory and/or cardiological diseases where conventional life support is not sufficient. The machine temporarily takes over the lung and heart functions and allows the organs to rest.
