Catalan Health Institute
It is the largest public health service company in Spain and is affiliated to the Department of Health of the Generalitat de Catalunya. The Catalan Health Institute is made up of eight hospitals and about 300 primary care teams. It provides healthcare to almost six million users, a figure that represents 75% of the total number of people with healthcare rights in Catalonia.
The Catalan Health Institute (ICS) also manages three large high-tech tertiary hospitals (Vall d'Hebron, Bellvitge and Germans Trias i Pujol); four leading regional hospitals (Arnau de Vilanova in Lleida, Joan XXIII in Tarragona, Josep Trueta in Girona and Verge de la Cinta in Tortosa), as well as a county hospital (Viladecans).
As a reference centre in the public healthcare system, the ICS aims to improve the health and quality of life of the public by promoting healthy habits, the prevention of health problems and the by the treatment of diseases, from the most mundane to those requiring a more complex approach.
Along with this welfare activity, the ICS carries out intense research work, through the seven research institutes integrated into its hospital and primary care centres. This research is aimed at providing clinical solutions, in the hope that scientific results can lead to an improvement in people’s health. This is also the case with our teaching activity.
The ICS is a leader in the training of healthcare professionals in Catalonia. It is responsible for training 2,300 professionals from 51 different specialties in health sciences and 4,500 students in the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry and other disciplines. It is also responsible for running continued training programmes aimed at all professional groups. All this to ensure that the Catalan Health Institute continues to lead the way in public services.
As a member of the Catalan Health Institute, Vall d'Hebron University Hospital is governed by an ethical code.
